August / Book List

really enjoyed my morning reading spot this summer.
my rule is that I'm allowed to sit down & drink my coffee/read my book until I'm done.
Not necessarily uninterrupted time, but you get it.

here's this month's list...
(4 audio, 2 books)

The Best We Could Do, Thi Bui
(graphic novel, memoir)
This was more history than I was expecting. Set in Vietnam.

"In the path of war, people built their makeshift lives & survived by whatever means they had."

Almost Everything, Anne Lamott
(non fiction, audio, read by the author)
Anne does it again. Really good.

"Practice finding & living in the soul. This grows our muscles for living."

"It's okay to stare out the window. Silence is medicine. You may feel overwhelmed with the profundity of the moment, or get really bored. That's okay."

Aliveness is what we find way deep down inside, for a moment here, an interval there, those pulses that go on inside us all the time, in our homes, in our environment, & in the universe; the continuum from which we are so often isolated in our self conscious kiosks by habit & upbringing."

Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone
(fiction, audio)
We delved into Harry's world one our road trip.
Both Asher & Edie really enjoyed.

"It does not do good to dwell in dreams & forget to live." (Dumbledore)

This Tender Land, William Krueger
(fiction)
Didn't love, but decided to finish & had some twists.

"There is a river that runs through time & the universe, vast & inexplicable, a flow of spirit that is at the heart of all existence, & every molecule of our being is a part of it. & what is God but the whole of that river?"

"Of all that we're asked to give others in this life, the most difficult to offer may be forgiveness."

Book Lovers, Emily Henry
(fiction, audio)
Rom-com is definitely out of my typical genre, but I actually enjoyed this way more than I expected.

"What do you want to do tonight? Shall we consult the list? Okay, I'm too tired to do any of this."

"My mom used to say: you can't control the passage of time, but you can soften its blow to your face."

Crying in H Mart, Michelle Zauner
(food/memoir, audio by the author)
Also really enjoyed this one. Audio very well done by the author.

"Our shared appreciation of korean food served not only as a form of mother daughter bonding, but also a pure & abiding source of her approval."

"My childhood was rich with flavour."
